Establishing a Radiation Therapy Center
Cancer is a growing burden worldwide. In the effort to fight it, radiotherapy has proved an important and effective treatment for both malignant and benign tumours, with around 60% of cancer patients needing radiotherapy.
Radiotherapy centres across every region of the Kingdom are therefore among the most important means of improving the quality of cancer treatment and easing patients' suffering. The Madinah region has no radiotherapy centres or equipment and no cyclotron for radiological use — hence the need to establish a radiotherapy centre with a cyclotron unit in Madinah.
Project objective:
Improving patient safety and adherence to treatment (1,800 patients a year).
Improving the patient experience and sparing patients the hardship of travel.
Completing the range of cancer treatment services at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Madinah.
Meeting national standards and international recommendations for radiotherapy services for cancer patients.
Project rationale:
There is no radiotherapy centre in Madinah, so patients have to travel to Riyadh or Jeddah for treatment.
